I'm pretty pleased with my final letterforms. I think they work well as a series because of the single typeface & simplicity of materials - ink pen on tracing paper. The layers of the tracing paper help to communicate the concept and I think for most of the letterforms the word 'layer' comes through. I stuck to simple patterns, clean & geometrical designs - I think if there was an odd one out in the set it would be the R. Although it still works as communicating 'layer' I don't think it is in the same style as the others and was difficult to execute precisely. My favourite two letters are the N and the Y which were both chosen in the group crit as 2 of the 5 most effective letters within our group. If I'd had more time I would have explored the idea of geometry and finding mathematical solutions within the letters more.
The crit was useful to see how other people had approached the brief and also to get feedback - I agreed with the five letters that were chosen out of mine to be the most effective. It was hard to evaluate other people's work and choose the five best letters out of so many but we went for the ones which communicated the word the most effectively, and as a group agreed on the decisions made. As a brief I enjoyed it and was pleased with the final outcomes. When eliminating letterforms to choose the best out of the other groups' 2 of my letters were left on the wall - the 'N' and the 'Y', which was great to have positive responses from the rest of the class.
